What Is the Difference Between Assisted Living and Memory Care?
Assisted living generally helps with daily activities such as meals, medication routines and personal care. Memory care is designed for people with dementia who need more specialized support, structured routines and often a higher level of supervision.
Compare needs, not labels
Kimberly Diaz, RN uses nearly three decades of nursing experience to help families focus on what actually happens during the day and night. Communities differ, so ask exactly what each location can provide.
- How much cueing or hands-on assistance is needed?
- Is the person at risk of wandering or becoming lost?
- How are distress, sleep changes or falls addressed?
- What would prompt a transfer to another level of care?
Look at staffing and cost
Ask about staff training, supervision, activities and the plan for care changes. A lower advertised rate may not include the assistance the person needs; request an itemized estimate and reassessment policy.
Make a person-centered decision
A diagnosis alone does not choose a building. Include the older adult's preferences when possible and discuss clinical concerns with the treating team before committing to a setting.
